🚅 Riding the Kamome SHINKANSEN 🚅 from Fukuoka to Nagasaki (Kyushu, Japan) 2024
What it's like on one of Japan's newest bullet trains: the Kamome Shinkansen, including how to change trains at Takeo Onsen Station.
✨ Get my Japan guide book (300 pages): cakeswithfaces.co.uk/product/japan-travel-guide-book/
The Kamome shinkansen started running in autumn 2022, on the Nishi Kyushu Shinkansen line from Fukuoka (Hakata Station) to Nagasaki in Kyushu. The first part of the line is a regular express train called the Relay Kamome. Then you change trains at Takeo Onsen Station to the full speed bullet train to Nagasaki. The complete journey takes 1.5 hours. The trains are timed together, so to change at Takeo Onsen, you just have to cross over the platform. The video also includes what there is to do in Takeo Onsen, in case you want to spend more time there! I went on a day trip to Nagasaki from Fukuoka. A great tip is you get better seats if you reserve a seat - the reserved car is more comfortable and spacious than the unreserved car. Kamome means seagull in Japanese, because part of the trainline runs by the sea. The Kamome was the newest shinkansen in Japan, until the Hokuriku Shinkansen line was extended from Kanazawa to Tsuruga in March 2024. The video includes what it's like on the train, reserving seats with a regional JR Pass, unreserved vs reserved car, what's on the train and where to put your luggage.

    How many Kyushu passes should I buy if I travel the whole of Kyushu in 15 days?

    • @cakeswithfaces
      @cakeswithfaces 15 годин тому

      You can get the pass for 3, 5 or 7 days, and there are passes for the whole of Kyushu, as well as northern Kyushu (that's the one I got earlier this year) and southern Kyushu. Depending on your plans, you'd need to work out when it's best to have each pass, compared to buying individual train tickets. Ideally you'd do most of your long distance travelling within the period of a rail pass, to save the most money, then get individual tickets for shorter/fewer journeys eg if you're staying in one place for a few days.

      Yes, you can buy it online, then pick it up from a major JR station in Kyushu, like Hakata. There was a poster for a mobile version, which you probably wouldn't have to pick up, but I haven't tried that one!

      @@cakeswithfaces Thank you for that. Also have noticed several reviews mentions the area is sketchy side of town, did you feel safe in that area. We like that it is close to everything and hoping the area is at least safe. Our main concern is feeling safe to walk late at night.

    • @cakeswithfaces
      @cakeswithfaces День тому

      @@patriciawong5270 Kabukicho is the red light district, and the "bad area" of Tokyo, if there is one. However, crime levels in Japan are very low. The only time you're likely to have any trouble is if you let touts entice you into their dodgy bars. There are cases where tourists have had their drinks spiked and their money stolen, or had huge bills to pay at the end of the night. If you ignore the touts, it's fine. Walking around the streets is perfectly safe - I stayed there again this year. There are many dodgy girls bars, etc, so you may see signs for them - it's not dangerous, just maybe not a "family" area. Here's a video I made about the subject - it's a few years old but still valid: ua-cam.com/video/rjUeeKoiwFY/v-deo.html

    We found the relay Kamome very uncomfortable, busy, and very difficult to find space for our luggage not helped by the fact our booking via JR Kyushu's own website had us booked on the shinkansen from Fukuoka changing at Shin Tosu to the relay Kamome, then the standard change at Takeo Onsen and we had to rush each time to make connections, same on the return trip. The Kamome Shinkansen itself is amazing. Next time we'll book at the station or fly!

    I love Shinkansen (and train travel in Japan in general). When in Tokyo, we usually get a plattform ticket at "Tokyo station", so that we can spend 1-3 hours on the rail tracks and enjoy the Shinkansen coming into the station, being cleaned, being refulled, and than leaving again. I guess I am a train geek ;-).

    One thing I learned with Takeo Onsen station, if you decide to get off, you can also have a special saga beef bento box with kalbi or sukiyaki versions. It costs a little more, but it was really good. It is in the Kairodo Cafe in the station, and there is a limited number of them available. This ekiben has won the Kyushu ekiben grand prix three years running.

    I was in Kyushu in 07 when the Shinkansen line to Kagoshima was partly complete. I had to take a "Relay Tsubame" (class 787) from Hakata to Shin-Yatsushiro to catch the Tsubame Shinkansen train to Kagoshima-Chuo. As I recall, the class 800 train had 2+2 seating in all cars and no green car. While riding the Relay, I could see the remaining segment of the Shinkansen under construction. While in Kyushu, I also rode a couple of the 885s you did on the Relay and they're among the best looking "Limited Express" trains in Japan. This could be the real reason some people still take them all the way to Nagasaki. My favorite Shinkansen train is JR West's class 500, my choice for best looking high speed train ever. I think you did a video about the one that was turned into the "Hello Kitty" train.

    We took Kamome last April 2023 going to Nagasaki...Planning to visit again this December...I was just wondering why there is no Shinkansen trip from Hakata to Nagasaki...Why Kamome starts at Takeo Onsen...

    I don't like this "bullet 🚅 train", because during every night and you being alone yourself or couples. My friend beware, I saw a 'japanese news on UA-cam'. There's a 'strange stalker passenger' right here on your "bullet 🚅 train!" Please, this is not a joke! If you seen a strange or horrible curiosity? 😮 Notify the conductor 'immediately'! Before seconds counts 'executioner' will attack immediately. This is"a crazed killer on the bullet 🚅 train"! Stay safe you 2.

      Thankfully I've never heard that announcement... on the whole, crime levels in Japan are low and it's a safe place compared to many countries.

    As a wider european gentleman, I dislike the 3-2 carriages on the shinkansen. The 2-2 arrangement on the Hayabusa still has a special place in my heart <3

    5:37 > Why does this always happen Since it is the Sound barrier (for local residency from the Sinkansen running noise), you will encounter such situations in densely populated areas. Additionally, it is common and normal to find densely populated coastal areas in Japan, as 70% of the country's land area is mountainous and people tend to avoid these mountain areas to live.

      It's understandable so as not to annoy people who live there - but the view always seems to be clear until I pick up my camera...! 😝

    I love Nagasaki. 🥰 I think Nagasaki is a really beautiful city. 💖✨ I love Champon in Nagasaki. 🤤 The new Shinkansen Kamome has a unique design. 🧐 I want to take the new Kamome and go to Nagasaki again. 💓

      I am also a big fan of Nagasaki. For the history (most importantly the atomic bomb in the 2nd world war), the sights, and the food. We enjoyed Chinatown there, and the tasty chinese food there, in very simple but traditional chinese restaurants.

    I am planning to go on a group trip to Japan next year in April and it will normally go to Fukuoka and Saga (among others of course), so the people of Saga definitely don't need to worry about me going past them! :p I'm so hyped for it even though I haven't even booked it yet. And one of the 'weird little things' I'm really looking forward to is riding the Shinkansen!!

      I'm sure Saga prefecture will be happy you're visiting! :-) I was excited to go on the shinkansen when I first went to Japan too! (Tbf that feeling doesn't wear off!).

    I really hope Saga Prefecture will let go of their issues and allow the Nishi-Kyushu Shinkansen to connect directly to Hakata. 🚅

    When I go there, can I select the ride I want and pay for express pass for that ride only via the application?

    • @cakeswithfaces
      @cakeswithfaces 5 днів тому

      I don't think it works like that for USJ. There's a choice of Express Passes that each include combinations of multiple rides, rather than buying passes for rides individually.
